Calgary, the Heart of The New West

Calgary – the largest city in the province of Alberta, third largest city in Canada. Located at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River, between the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the Canadian Prairies. The city (and before that Fort Calgary) was named after Calgary Castle on the scottish Isle of Mull. In Old Norse ‘kald gart’ means ‘cold garden’. In 1988 Calgary was the host of XV Olympic Winter Games. The city, nicknamed ‘Cowcity’ or ‘The Stampede City’, is known for the oil industry and rodeos.  The Blackfoot name of the Calgary is ‘Mohkínstsis’.
