Dettifoss

Dettifoss – a waterfall of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, in Jökulsárgljúfur canyon (which is a separated part of Vatnajökull National Park), the largenrst (volume discharge: 193 m³/s) one in Iceland, the second (after the Rhine Falls in Switzerland) most powerful in Europe. Located on Diamond Circle route in Northeastern Region of Iceland. It is 44 m high and 100 m wide. few hundred meters upstream there is broad waterfall Selfoss (11 m high).

Dettifoss is featured in movies: Prometheus (2012) – opening scene – and in Oblivion (2013).

Réttarfoss

Réttarfoss– the penultimate waterfall of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, in Jökulsárgljúfur canyon (which is a separated part of Vatnajökull National Park). It is located on Diamond Circle route in Northeastern Region of Iceland.

The Réttarfoss is 12 m high and 75 m wide.  Upstream there are waterfalls: Selfoss, Dettifoss, Hafragilsfoss, downstream – Vígabjargsfoss.

Jökulsárgljúfur: Glacial River Canyon

JökulsárgljúfurGlacial River Canyon – the canyon of Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, one of the most spectacular and deepest (up tp 120 m) canyons in Iceland. It is 25 km long, 500 m wide.
With waterfalls: Selfoss, Dettifoss, Hafragilsfoss and Réttarfoss. It is located on Diamond Circle route in Northeastern Region of Iceland.

The source of river Jökulsá á Fjöllum (Glacial River in the Mountains) is in Vatnajökull glacier, in the area of the subglacial volcano Bárdarbunga. This second longest (206 km) river in the country flows into the Greenland Sea (Öxarfjörður fjord).

Jökulsárgljúfur is a separated part of Vatnajökull National Park, with many popular destinations:

Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrafoss

Seljalandsfoss (Selling Land Waterfall) – a waterfall on Seljalands river (that comes from volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull), in Southern Region in Iceland, along the Ring Road. Its drop is 60 m high and you can walk behind it. Nearby, there is Gljúfrafoss / Gljúfrabúi (One Who Lives in the Canyon) waterfall with a cliff rock.

Seljalandsfoss is featured in music videos (Justin Bieber – I’ll Show You), TV shows (The Amazing Race 6) and movies (The Juniper Tree, On Top Down Under, Dilwale).
