Gabon – interesting facts:
- The name Gabon derives from gabao, which means cloak in Portugese. Komo River mouth was desribed as in shape of a cloak.
- More than 80 percent of the country is covered in forest. More than 11 percent is protected area (national parks).
- The Equator passes through 13 countries – Gabon is one of them.
- Africa’s Last Eden and the best wildlife-watching place in the world is located in Gabon – it is in the Loango National Park.
- Gabon is also called the land of the surfing hippos.
- This area has been inhabited for over 400 thousand years. First to settle here were Pygmies, now they are only 0,3 percent of population.
- Ecosystem and Relict Cultural Landscape of Lopé-Okanda is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gabon, with the highest in the world concentration of elephants and one of the biggest populations of mandrills.
- Gabon is home to the leatherback (the largest species of sea turtle in the world) and to around 80% of Africa’s gorillas.
