Mangroves in Khor Al Beidah in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, UAE.
A mangrove – in Arabic “qurm” (قُرْم) – a shrub / small tree growing in coastal saline water, adapted to low oxygen level, high salinity, temperature and moisture changes (becuse of tides). Mangrove forest move carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and play important role in shoreline protection (e.g. they prevent erosion, filter pollutants). They are natural environment for many species of birds.
In UAE the largest magroves forest are in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (Saadiyat Island, Jubail Island, Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, Bu Sayeef Protected Area, Ras Gharab, Eastern Corniche, Ras Ghanada), but they are also present in other regions: in Umm Al Quwain (photo gallery below), Ajman (Al Zorah Natural Reserve), Dubai (Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary), Ras al Khaimah(RAK City – Al Qurm, Al Rams), Sharjah (Mangrove and Alhafeya Protected Area in Khor Kalba).
