Date palms in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, UAE.
Date palm – phoenix dactylifera (“date-bearing palm”) – a plant cultivated (for thousands of years already) mostly in North Africa and in the Middle East for its edible very sweet fruits – dates (ripe dates cointain 60-80% of sugar). The biggest date producers include: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Algeria. There are separate male and female plants and pollination is done manually. A date palm will bear first fruits after 4-8 years and when mature will produce 70-140 kg of dates per season. Latin and English names of that plant come from Greek “daktylos” (“date”, “finger”).
