Goðafoss – a waterfall of the river Skjálfandafljót, 12 high, 30 m wide, located on the crossroad of Ring Road and Diamond Circle route in Northeastern Region of Iceland. Nerby, downstream there is a smaller waterfall Geitafoss.
The name of the waterfall might mean waterfall of the goð (pagan idols) or waterfall of the goði (chieftain). According to legend, lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði (Thorgeir Ljosvetningagodi Thorkelsson), after his return in 999/1000 from Alþingi (Althing, national parliament of Iceland located in Þingvellir/Thingvellir), where he had announced Christianity as the official religion of Iceland, threw his Norse gods idols into the waterfall.

I’ve not heard of Goðafoss, as I’m sure it’s overshadowed by the bigger, more well-known waterfalls like Gullfoss and Seljalandsfoss. Just as beautiful, though!

There are many beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. Many of them off the beaten track… 🙂
