Akureyri – the Capital of North Iceland

Akureyri – “the Capital of North Iceland” – a town at the base of Eyjafjörður Fjord, fourth largest municipality in the country (after Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður and Kópavogur), the seat of Northeastern Region of Iceland. An important port and fishing centre. Much of the houses in Akureyri are using geothermal heating.

Akureyri sigths:

  • Akureyrarkirkja (Akureyri Church) from 1940,
  • Akureyri Art Museum,
  • Botanical Gardens.
