The horseshoe-shaped (“Sleipnir’s footprint”) glacial canyon Ásbyrgi, located on Diamond Circle route in Northeastern Region of Iceland. Divided by rock formation Eyjan (Island). With cliffs up to 100 m high, forest and small lake Botnstjörn. Formed in the Ice Age most likely as a result of glacial flooding of river Jökulsá á Fjöllum (which has changed its course). Legend has it, the canyon is a foorprint of Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged horse.
Ásbyrgi canyon lies in Jökulsárgljúfur protected area, which is a separated part of the Vatnajökull National Park.
