Mývatn and Hverfjall are located in volcanism area on the crossroad of Ring Road and Diamond Circle route in Northeastern Region of Iceland. Mývatn is a shallow lake, formed by a basaltic lava eruption in 300 BC, protected as a nature reserve (Mývatn-Laxá Nature Conservation Area) – together with River Laxá and surrounding wetland (Ramsar List wetland). The name Mývatn means in Icelandic: the Lake of Midges. Hverfjall (Hverfell) a volcano, erupted in 2500 BC, with crater diameter: approx. 1 km, near Mývatn lake.
