Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 m) – the highest mountain of Iceland, located in Eastern Region (Eastfjords), one of the peaks along the edges of Öræfajökull glacier, a volcanic crater (5 km diameter) filled with ice, in Vatnajökull National Park. Öræfajökull is an active volcano, with major eruptions in 1362 and in 1727.
Öræfajökull is considered to be a part of Vatnajökull (Lake Glacier) glacier, which – with the area of 8500 km2 approx. – is the largest one in Iceland and the largest glacial ice cap in Europe.
