Heimaey island

Heimaey (Home Island) – an island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, in Southern Region of Iceland. The largest (13,4 km2) and most populated (4500 inhabitants) island off the Iceland coast, famous for its Atlantic puffin colonies (8 million puffins stay here every summer). The island’s volcano – Eldfell (Hill of Fire) – started an eruption in 1973, destroying 400 houses in the town.
