Skaftafell

Skaftafell – a preservation area in Öræfi (Öræfasveit), near the Öræfajökull volcano, in Eastern Region (Eastfjords) in Iceland, a part of Vatnajökull National Park (before it was separate Skaftafell National Park). Skaftafell area consist of Morsárdalur valley, Kristínartindar mountain (1126 m) and Skaftafellsjökull glacier – a spur of the Vatnajökull. The main toursit attraction is Svartifoss (Black Fall) waterfall, with black basalt columns behind it. There were several farms in the area, the old farmhouse in Sel was restored by National Museum.

There are many hiking trails of different difficulty levels. Skaftafell Visitor Centre provides information about the Vatnajökull National Park, glaciers and vulcanos of the area.
