Pompeii – an ancient city, today within Naples area (Campania, Italy). Founded in 6th–7th century BC and in 79 AD buried under volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius volcano. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 (Archaeological Areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Torre Annunziata). The name “Pompeii” comes from the oskan word pompe, which means five.
