Sea of Marmara (Sea of Marmora / Marmara Sea / ancient: Propontis) – a small (area of 11350 km2) inland sea, connecting Black Sea (via Bosphorus strait) with Aegean Sea (via Dardanelles strait). It is located within Turkey and separates (together with Bosphorus) its Asian and European parts.
The name “Sea of Marmara” comes from Marmara Island, with rich marble (mármaron in Greek) resources. The ancient name of the sea – Propontis – means in Greek before see (Pontos = Black Sea).
