Amsterdam

Amsterdam – the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands, “the Venice of the North” with its famous canals from 17th century (UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Defence Line of Amsterdam). The name of the city comes from “Aemstelredamme” – “a dam across Amstel river”, which was built after the floods in in 12th century in the small fishing village. However the oldest part of the city (annexed in early 20th century) comes from the 9th century.
